So, I'm looking forward to future successes, from this struggling starting position of swimming upstream. It's taken about three weeks of messing around, so far. I guess things will improve with time and as I get more used to the new environment. With help from UA, MULab and Dell, I've managed to get it to a reasonable state where it seems that it's stable, just with the occasional click now. Strangely, the speed seemed to change as well. Luckily, I also have an older Dell XPS 15 with one T3 port and trying it through there seemed to work better.Įventually I got sound through the Arrow on the XPS 13, but it was full of crackles, buzzes and sounded as if it was coming from under water. I struggled for quite a while to get any sound at all to come through either headphones or speaker. Unfortunately, I went the whole hog on this one and also bought a new PC with the latest CPU, 16Gb of memory and three Thunderbolt 3 (T3) ports. I was hoping for something that would be a bit more plug and play. MuLab is an inspiring music studio for Windows and macOS featuring an integrated top-quality modular synth, sampler and effect engine. To get to use UA software, you have to buy UA hardware seems a bit 1990’s to me. After all, the software resides on the computer, and to use the interface as a stand alone mixer is just not possible without a computer. Forget messing around with compressors Nicky Romero and Cableguys have combined everything you need for a professional sidechain into one quick and easy plugin. Developers are constantly improving such software making them suitable for both amateur and professional use. So having access to that is cool until you think about how so many companies realize that a simple dongle or a cloud based system would make everybody’s life so much simpler. Kickstart 2 instantly solves the problem of clanging, mixing up kicks and bass. The market offers a great variety of guitar recording programs for PC that are easy-to-use.I need access to the software, and have them on the road. Nice preamps, cool design, ok price if I got some new plugins. Just lugging around a brick, and weighs as much as one, adds to all the other stuff I have to carry. I can use this Arrow, don’t get me wrong. But puts way too much dependency on other manufacturers. Directly inputting (or ‘DI-ing’) your instrument in this way. UA thinks that their hardware won’t fail, which is probably right. While many would argue that the only way to accurately capture an electric guitar performance is by mic’ing up your amplifier and hitting record, in my latest video I share 3 ways that you can directly input your guitar into your Mac so that you can record it in GarageBand. Even presonus knows to throw in an external power supply, just in case. I know that power on data busses go out all the time. I understand the convenience of bus powering, but if that’s your only way to get juice to the box, then there is a dependence on a computer manufacturer that is fragile at best. I need to record my Guitar into Bitwig but first I need to setup the Audio preferences in Bitwig to allow me to select the correct input for recording. NOPE! This guy is only thunderbolt three bus powered and has no way to plug in a wall wart. No problem, just plug in the optional power supply I’m thinking. After all it does get hot, meaning the hardware designer is probably living in an analog world. Apparently thunderbolt two can’t provide enough power to run two simple preamps of the Arrow. Well that’s fine but that one is limited with soldered storage and my road ready laptop has thunderbolt two. Ok I thought, just use my newest MacBook Pro. That is a problem with my Dell XPS which also has one connector. But there is only one thunderbolt three connector and I cannot loop through. No biggy I thought, at least now I can bring my plugins with me on the road. UA’s answer to that was NO! So the value of this so called portable interface was immediately cut in half. As a registered owner of four UA interfaces, I expected to get the opportunity to swap out my packaged software bundle with different plugins. But that’s where my positive review starts down the dark path of whoa. MuLab 5/6 UL users can upgrade for 19 EUR until June 15th, 2016 (regular 25 EUR), and MUX Modular users can upgrade for 15 EUR (regular 19 EUR).The build, like most UA hardware is fantastic. MuLab is available for purchase for 69 EUR MUX Modular 7 is 59 EUR, and a bundle of both is 99 EUR.
